Itchy Skin

Having itchy skin can be very irritating and can even be very embarrassing especially when you are in social gathering.

Itchy skin (pruritus) is an uncontrollable sensation that makes you want to scratch the itchy part to get relief. Sometimes, the more you scratch, the itchier it becomes, I know that feeling, so I will give you some solutions to it. But firstly, there is the need to know there are different causes of itchiness, internal illness could cause itchiness, skin rashes could cause itchiness, and even nerve disorders can cause itchiness.

Here are some causes of itchy skin :-

  1. Dermatitis
  2. Dry skin
  3. Athlete’s foot
  4. Diaper rash
  5. Jock itch
  6. Psoriasis
  7. Hepatitis
  8. Thalassemia
  9. Chemical burns
  10. Yellow fever

Now that you know the general, possible reason for itchy skin let’s talk about some specifics, to give you complete knowledge of itchiness.

Dermatitis

Dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin. It makes the skin red and itchy with blisters that ooze fluid. Here are different types of dermatitis;

  • Contact dermatitis
  • Nummular dermatitis
  • Atopic dermatitis or eczema
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis
  • Stasis dermatitis

 Symptoms of Dermatitis

  • A red rash that is in the area of the skin exposed to an irritating substance may be a symptom of dermatitis.
  • Yellowish, greasy scales on the eyebrows, scalp, around the nose and behind the ears suggest seborrhoeic dermatitis. Seborrhoeic dermatitis in infants is called cradle cap.
  • Extreme itchiness may indicate atopic dermatitis (atopic eczema). Itchiness might be simply because of dry skin.
  • Red, circular patches of weeping, scaly, itchy skin might be a symptom of nummular dermatitis; it is most common in old people who love in dry environments or have dry skins.
  • Ulcerated skin appearing around the ankle and inside the lower legs may signal stasis dermatitis.

Skin Rashes

Skin rash indicates an abnormal change in skin texture or colour; Rashes are mostly caused by the inflammation of the skin.

There are different types of rashes which are;

  • Eczema
  • Lichen
  • Planus
  • Pityriasis rosea
  • Granuloma annular

A rash may be limited to one part of the body, or it can affect all the skin. Rashes would cause the skin to itch; making you want to scratch, it can even cause the skin to change colour, become swollen, etc.

The rash can last between 5 to 18 days or even more, the presence of a rash may be a symptom of certain diseases.

Remedies for Itchy Skin

First, start with the simplest solutions before advancing to meeting your doctor. The simplest solutions are:

  1. Have your bath regularly
  2. Try a different fabric
  3. Use mild soaps
  4. Keep your fingernails always clean because there is every possibility of repeat scratching
  5. Wear loose cotton cloth
  6. Wear a sunscreen (optional)

If after you have tried all the above and the itchiness persists, you are advised to visit your doctor as soon as possible.
